She pays 30,000 lempiras in rent a year for the space, then she has to rebuild everything when it is lost. There is no more money coming in, the whole family lives on it. She is a widow with her children. Remember the whole area when there were no businesses in that area. She also had a boat and he lost it under the sea.

The chair is from one of the businesses that she lost. You are watching the beach disappear. The town is being lost. Three times she lost her business, her restaurant. The entire wooden structure collapsed. Remember around 2002 as a key date as the beginning of the change in the sea. Their way of life is entirely within the sea. Added to this experience is the fact that her daughter Daniela drowned at the age of 9, in 2005, on Palm Sunday.

These pieces of wood are from the cleared forest at Glen Varragill, near Sligachan. Plantations of this kind were often established post-war, on areas of moor and drained peatland across the Highlands of Scotland, resulting in a monoculture crop of trees with very little biodiversity. When felled they release carbon into the atmosphere and leave behind extensive areas of land that will take a long time to regenerate.

Various: “including rising sea levels and tourism(!)”

–––––––––

Duncan Macpherson was the chemist in Kyle of Lochalsh, he was also a keen photographer who for over 30 years produced an annual Vest Pocket Guide to Kyle of Lochalsh and the Isle of Skye, printed his own postcards and wrote three books on the area. Macpherson drew this map and sold printed versions to people visiting the area. The map shows different locations in Skye and Lochalsh - including the sites of the objects we have shared for the archive - Waternish, Varrigill, Carbost and Reraig. We were thinking about how the landscape of Skye and Lochalsh has changed from when the map was first drawn in the 1920’s, and how tourism has played a significant role in these changes recently. There are often tensions between tourism’s role in supporting the fragile economy of Skye and Lochalsh, and the environmental and social wellbeing of the area.

Peat lands function as important carbon sinks and ecosystems. With the rising climate and the exposure of peatland, uncontrolled fires and drainage are depleting these vital areas. In addition, the relationship, knowledge and skills of communities cutting and drying peat for fuel is dwindling as traditional crofting practices dwindle.
